Bakhtin, M. M. (1981) "Forms of time and of the chronotope in the novel" in Holquist, Michael (ed.) The dialogic imagination: Four essays by M. M. Bakhtin. Austin and London: University of Texas Press.

This important text by Bakhtin discusses the relations of time and space in the literature of various epochs - starting with classic Greek novels and moving forward to the modern novels of France and Russia. The concept of 'chronotope' aims to capture at the same time the relations of time and space, although in fairness it seems that time relations are the most important for Bakhtin. Space is also primarily treated on large-scale, as in homeland versus foreign lands - there is little or no discussion of the category of place vs. space.
