Joliveau (2009) - Connecting Real and Imaginary Places through Geospatial Technologies
From Inventiopedia
Joliveau, Thierry (2009) "Connecting Real and Imaginary Places through Geospatial Technologies: Examples from Set-jetting and Art-oriented Tourism" The Cartographic Journal, pp. 36-45(10)
This is a must-read paper on the theory and practice of the connection between real and fictional places - that is, places as they appear in film, literature, art, computer games etc, and their physical counterparts. The author uses the concept of "set-jetting" - tourist excursions to the locations where famous movies were shot - as a primary motif for problematizing and theorizing the relation between fictional and real places.
Theoretically, the article the article has an impressive overview over the theoretical literature concerning the topic. But perhaps even more valuable is the array of examples from arts, technology and tourist industry, which includes a number of sharp competitors to the prototypes being developed in the Inventio project. I note with particular interest:
- tourism radio - gps-based tourist guide
- iPointer - point at a building and the phone tells you what it is
- Nokias augmented reality project
Read and weep!
